Create an account before renaming a project or pairing a device
Chief now asks you to sign up before you rename a project or connect the desktop app, so a browsing session can no longer act like a full account.
You can try Chief without signing in, and the app hands you a starter project to work in. Two actions that belong to a real account slipped through that browsing session: renaming a project and connecting the desktop app. Both now ask you to create an account first.
Rename prompts on project surfaces
Browsing without an account used to show you the rename controls and save your change. The pencil beside the project heading, the tooltip that invites you to name the project, the Edit name item in the project menu, and the Edit button on project settings all now open a sign-up prompt instead. Once you have an account, they open the rename as before.
Desktop app pairing
Connecting the Chief desktop app used to succeed from a browser session where nobody had signed in, and the resulting account could go on to create projects. Pairing now stops with a message asking you to sign in or create a Chief account for that device. You can sign up on the spot and finish connecting.
Devices paired from a browsing session
Devices that connected from a signed-out session before this change stayed connected. Chief has disconnected them. If one of your devices stops working, sign in to your account and pair it again.
If you have been using Chief without an account, creating one keeps the project you already started and unlocks renaming and the desktop app.
